…and this is what it turned into. I don’t know much about the people responsible for the damage other than that it was mostly left-wing extremists that belong to a group called ZAD. They brought tools to rip up cobblestone to use as projectiles and threw them at police and through store windows. It seems like they were targeting any and all government/transportation-related stores (TAN, SNCF, travel agencies…).
All I could see from behind the Commerce tram stop was the riot police and gendarmerie shooting tear gas bombs over a huge metal barricade and spraying water over it. Some already detonated (?? that sounds way scarier than it should) canisters got thrown back over by the protesters, so when Haley and I started smelling the gas we decided to get a better look…from 32 stories up on the roof of the Tour Bretagne. But it actually did start to burn our eyes/noses/throats at one point. Crazy.
I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be when thousands of people disagree with the government’s decisions, especially when it effects their livelihood. But it’s unbelievably frustrating to see such an awesome city have to deal with this shit. Cars don’t have to be turned over and burned, glass doesn’t have to be broken, and people don’t have to get hurt for a 20,000 person protest to be heard. I mean come on, they exploded the public toilets at Commerce! I know I’m not the only one who’s been in a desperate pee emergency when I was downtown.
Anyway, doesn’t sound like the governments budging on the airport! Check da news! I think a few US newspapers wrote about it, so use that for a fact checker - I’m no super reliable, unbiased source like Fox News or anything….
